DIY Embroidered Canvas–2013 Spring Pinterest Challenge

Ladies and gentleman… I am finally posting something new! Can you believe it?? I can hardly believe I made time to write a post.  Thank goodness for being able to write a post and schedule publishing it!! Anyway, on to the post.

It is time for the spring edition of the younghouselove and Bower Power Pinterest challenge. I have missed the last couple of these, but not this time! I told you I had been working on things, hadn’t I? Well here is a little project that I put together for Hannah’s room. I had repined this a while back, only to realize that the pin was a dud when I went to go to the actual post it should have linked to. So I spent some time recently scouring for the original post to no avail. I decided I really wanted to make it, so I just winged it. No tutorial, just looked at the pic and went for it. Then, one day while I was doing some Google research for some more art inspiration I came across it!! Woot! There is the back story, once again, on to the post!

Here is my pin:

My Pin

A canvas painted and embroidered. So cute, right?!

Now for my version of it. I chose to leave the canvas white (you will see why when I post about the grouping of art I did on the walls with this) and go for an ombre effect.

Ta-da!

Embroidered Canvas DIY

It was really simple and quick. Funny part of it is that I ended up punching holes in the canvas as well, since I couldn’t see the lines I was following from underneath the canvas. I just used the needle I was embroidering with. After reading Sandy’s post, I realized that her tute called for the same.  I didn’t measure any of my stitches either, just eyed it.

I’m not going to bore you with a tutorial, Sandy offered a great one.  I will explain how I did my stitching though.  It was very simple.  I brought the needle up through the canvas at the beginning of the L and brought it back through in the next hole.  Here is where I did things a little differently –  I then came back up in the next hole and brought the thread down through the end of the previous stitch.  I was afraid at first that the canvas wouldn’t handle it and would rip, but that didn’t happen and I was very gentle with it.

I wasn’t able to cover all of the “”template” I made with a pencil, so I attempted to cover it with some white acrylic paint.  In hindsight, that wasn’t a great idea since the paint is so white and the canvas is a bit off white.  I am going to try a few things to soften how white the paint is, I don’t think it will be difficult to correct.

Love canvas

I love how it turned out and I am dying to make another one. Maybe next time I will find a pattern to follow. Ohh… my mind is already running with this one, lol, off to write this stuff down before I forget!

If you joined in, don’t forget to link up on these awesome blogs!! And leave a comment here with a link to your project, I would love to see what you did!  I am sure that I am going to spending some time checking out all the neat projects!

Another Pinterest challenge – they just don’t get old!

It’s time for YHL and Bower Power’s regularly programmed Pinterest Challenge!! You know you have been pinning, you know you have a dozen projects you want to do. Well quit looking and talking and DO IT! I have a bunch of pins that are just no-brainers for getting done. I am pretty sure I have my project picked out, too. So go check out your boards and pick a project, then come back here next Wednesday, the 14th, and share what you did! Link up in the comments! Those crazy girls over there teamed up with Erin from The Great Indoors and Cassie from Hi Sugarplum! for this challenge. And if you aren’t familiar with Sherry at YHL and Katie at Bower Power you need to remedy that situation right now.

I think I will do one of these… you will have to wait till next week to find out which!

And while you are at it…go check out what everyone did over at:

Let the pinning begin!!!

Pinterest art challenge!

Amanda over at Our Humble A{Bowe}ed announced a Pinterest art challenge a week or so ago.  It’s been a while since I participated in a challenge, if you remember, I did this little canvas for the fist one.  I love when I see these challenges, cause you know that you have pinned at least 5 things that say “Must do this!”  And…. you never get around to it.  You don’t? Well, I do…so, I decided that since I had a pin I have been looking at for a while, and all of the supplies at home already to do it, that I should jump in with 2 feet on this challenge.

I had pinned this lovely canvas a while back.  I love some chevron and was really wanting to find ways to add it into my home.

Then I found where someone else had done it as well.  Here is the pin, for over at the embellished nest I used as a tutorial for my project.

Let’s get right into it.  I chose to get the kids involved with this one as well.  They love to help out, and I love having projects that we can keep for years made by them.

My supplies – plus several paint brushes, acrylic paints and little hands.

1

I followed the advice from my tutorial and measured out where I wanted my stripes to be.  I did this on both ends so that I would have markers to line up my tape.

2

Next I taped the straight lines that would serve as anchors for my chevron pattern.

I thought this next step might be tricky, but it wasn’t at all!

I simply marked the first side where I wanted it, judging distance without measuring.

5

The rest was easy peasy.

6

Now for the fun part!!  Painting!  I let the kids do most of this.  I filled in some spots and generally tried to convey to them what I was looking for.

Paint brushes in hand and paint ready… they went to town!

I think at one point Jeff even got involved. Smile

And here you go…all painted!  I added some silver metallic for some shiny contrast at the end.

9

I let it dry overnight.  And when I looked at it in the morning I realized I had missed an important color.  Oops!  Yellow!  I had some puff paint handy, so I just streaked around some yellow and white puff paint to brighten it up a bit.  I ended up having to use an exacto knife to gently slice the puff paint where the tape edges were so that when I pulled the tape off, the puff paint wouldn’t slide off with it.

And here we go… project complete!

I have gotten into the whole staging thing, can you tell?  lol  I am still getting the hang of it.  I really like how this turned out…and the fact that the kids made it makes it double awesome!

Anyone else do some DIY stuff recently?  Any fun kids projects?  Please share! I love to hear what others are doing!

My version of the Pinterest Challenge

Well it’s Wednesday…. and that means it is time to ante up with my Pinterest challenge. We have had a pretty busy last week, so forgive the simple nature of this project. This took about 10 minutes to do…although I am not sure I am done with it. I think it needs a little something else…it isn’t quite as good as I had hoped… anyhoo.. here you go!

Here was my inspiration..I saw this and fell in love with it. But I have 3 kids! So we needed more than one flower.

Since I already had supplies on hand for the small 8×10 canvas I used it. So here is my version….

This is a very straight forward project… it required an 8×10 canvas and your choice of acrylic paints, and a paint brush.

I had each child pick a color and put their hand print on the canvas. I used some wax paper for them to get good coverage on their hands before they put their prints to the canvas. Then I took some green acrylic paint and painted on a couple of leaves and stems. Voila! Complete!

Here is Ashton doing his…

Notice the cute little baby rolls?? Love that!
And Garrett doing his…

I couldn’t find the camera for Hannah’s, but just envision a 12-year-old putting her hand in paint (gross!!) lol

So did anyone join in? Did you at least find something on Pinterest that you would LOVE to make? I know my sister-in-law and I have to plan a weekend to do some projects.. there are just too many ideas that need to be tried!
